Smooth Operator around the world July 24th, 2005

Here’s Sade’s Smooth Operator, translated from English to Dutch to French to Greek and back to English

Smooth Operator: Sade

Raised the supports that they place that they make harten make bad.

Attitudes like Fergus… July 22nd, 2005

I am only linking to this filthy post to demonstrate the kind of writing that outrages me and makes me embarrassed.

It’s not because of the disagreement over police actions – I could cope with a well-argued defence of the actions. It’s the totally derogatory attitude that supposedly speaks for us all.

It’s disgusting and I’ve said so, albeit indirectly.

Grow up Fergus. Not all Muslims are terrorists. Asians carrying bags should not expect to be ‘assumed to be terrorists’ by the police.

Update: 10th August 2005: Well, I’ve well and truly offended Fergus. Whereas I focused on statements. he chose to focus upon my spelling (which was not great, I admit).

Apparently I’ve sent him hate-mail. Funny, as all I thought I’d done was write an article on my blog. But no… I must’ve written him a letter, as my (old) home address is published on his website. Or maybe, he decided to take my whois output (which I should have updated, but didn’t) so as to feel proud that he had my home address.

Are you expecting your readers to send me hate-mail, Fergus? If so, then all that will happen is that an innocent couple will receive unjustified mail. Nice try, though.

You’ll wait a long time for “Andy Merrett-flavoured bacon”. I don’t really care what you think of my beliefs – you can say they’re false if you like but it really makes no difference to me.

“I am, indeed, beyond belief.” you say. Not entirely. I quite believe you.

And I won’t be coming back to your ‘clean’ site so don’t worry about that.

I can’t even be bothered to waste energy explaining why I am not a “bin Laden-lover”, or to argue against your newest pathetic statement: ” BREAKING NEWS! He wasn’t a suicide bomber, he was an illegal immigrant. Tragedy, shame. You know what? He still deserved it.”.

PS I could play by the same rules, telling you exactly where Fergus lives in Southeast London, and giving you his mobile phone number, but I don’t play those rules: (07*** ***422).

Man shot dead: Still Terrorism July 22nd, 2005

I usually have admiration for the police, but not in this instance.

I don’t care whether this is one of the terrorists or not: In this situation the police themselves put lives at risk, and inflicted their own sense of ‘terror’ on proceedings.

What happened to non-lethal shots?

Did they not want to question this man?

Obviously not, as it’s pretty difficult to question a dead man.

“I saw the gun being fired five times into the guy – he is dead,” he [an eyewitness] said.

Given the often trigger-happy stance of our police, this is worrying. Firing live ammunition on a busy commuter service is worrying.

Update:

Eyewitness account from the BBC website

Passenger Alison Bowditch told BBC News: “The tube pulled into the station and we were sitting there, you know, as you do and then there was just a lot of shouting and the sound of gunfire and then people were saying, ‘Get off, get off!’

“Somebody definitely went to the ground and as they went to the ground I heard gun fire and assumed they had been shot.”

Jason Dines, of Brixton, south London, was on a train that pulled in to Stockwell station at about 1000 BST.

He told BBC News: “I suddenly became aware there was a real sense of panic.

“I could see people running down the platform to the exit.

“People on my train started banging on the doors, saying, ‘Let us off, let us off!’

“They were making so much noise, it was impossible to hear the driver’s announcements.

“The fear was contagious – I felt my heart racing.

“The doors of the train opened – but the driver was trying to get everyone to get back on the train.

“The PA system on the platform was clearer.

“Once people got the message they got back onto my train, and we continued on our way.

“At that point people were saying they had seen armed police shoot a man on the opposite platform.

“People were very scared. I was very angry.”

(Further update: for the sake of space, or maybe to remove emotive responses, the BBC report has removed the last line in that quote)

I know this was done in the name of law enforcement, but please enlighten me Sir Ian – how is this not also terrorism?

Update: Saturday 23rd July 8am: Let’s not forget, as if we could, that this is happening worldwide. London is just another city that terrorists aim to bring to its knees for whatever reasons and motives they have.

Today: Dozens killed in Egyptian blasts.

The Bloglines plumber? July 22nd, 2005

Bloglines Plumber

Hi,

I’m the Bloglines Plumber. We’ve had a database problem, and we currently expect to be back at 3Am Pacific Time, Friday July 22. Bloglines will be all better when I’m done with it.

Thanks,
The Bloglines Plumber

OK then…

Bloglines has been having a few problems over the past couple of days. Trying to work out when 3am Pacific Time is in British Summer Time – maybe 11am or 12noon.

I am wondering if these are the same utility guys responsible for sorting out previous FlickR problems? Not sure if plumbers were involved then … hang on, it was masseurs, wasn’t it?

I digress.

Defiance, bravery, stupidity July 22nd, 2005

The title describes my feelings – the first two towards ordinary Londoners, the second towards the bombers.

There are a lot more words that can be used for both, but I’ll leave it there for now.

Let’s hope that the fortunate stupidity (ineptitude, incompetence, arrogance) of the bombers – who this time failed to make bombs that actually exploded – will enable forensic teams to get a whole heap of evidence against the people who made them.

Of course, we’re all incredibly pleased that the attacks didn’t go as planned this time – and perhaps we’re able to laugh just a little (in that seemingly slightly odd way the British seem to do so well in the face of adversity) at how this time some thicko terrorists got it wrong. Can’t even make a bomb, eh?

Of course, they got it ‘right’ to some degree two weeks ago, and that was a tragedy. Just as the IRA years brought tragedy. Just as the World Wars brought tragedy – to our capital and our nation.

I’m not into nationalism – and I certainly don’t support all that our Government do (despite accusations from certain groups that the British people must agree with their leaders because they voted them in)…

…nevertheless, I feel proud to be a Londoner (for the past 13 years, at least). Despite the reputation that we British have for moaning, whinging and negativity at times, I am proud that, at least in adversity, there is commonality of spirit, there is positivity and a refusal to be downtrodden, even amongst sorrow.

Time to close, before I get too philosophical.

Two weeks on: innocent evacuations or worse? July 21st, 2005

Tube evacuations at a glance (BBC News)

Two weeks after the terrorist attacks in London, three Underground stations have been evacuated – Warren Street, Oval and Shepherd’s Bush – with early reports of smoke.

Early indications from the attacks on 7th July were of electrical failures, so unfortunately, given the current climate and feelings in London, even an unknown or apparently unrelated incident (particularly one that warrants evacuation) may be seen at its worse.

The entire Northern Line has been suspended, and Waterloo Tube station is also closed due to a security alert.

Given the state of our transport system, this could be purely a mechanical or electrical failure caused by old and under-invested systems. We all know what else it could be.

Yet again, London watches and waits…

…sirens, if only psychologically, seem more frequent and louder; commuters do their best to carry on; our brave and wonderful emergency service staff prepare themselves – just in case.

Update Thursday 21st July 1.55pm: Dummy explosions using detonators only have sparked the evacuation of three Tube stations and the closure of three lines, a BBC correspondent has said. This isn’t officially confirmed, as far as I can tell

Emergency services also attended an incident on a route 26 bus in Hackney Road in Bethnal Green.

Update Thursday 21st July 2.15pm: One person was injured at Warren Street, although the person’s condition is unknown.

Westminster Underground station evacuated.

Tony Blair and Ken Livingstone cancel meetings.

UK Government’s emergency-response team Cobra meets at Downing Street, with Prime Minister Tony Blair and Foreign Secretary Jack Straw attending.

Update: Thursday 21st July 2.55pm: Met Police chief Sir Ian Blair says this is a “serious incident”.

He appealed to Londoners to stay where they were and said the transport system was effectively being shut down.

Trials on British soldiers for alleged Iraqi abuses July 20th, 2005

Unfortunately, I’m not surprised at all – British military being tried (albeit internally) for war crimes against Iraqi detainees.

And I have always believed that war and terrorism are much the same thing – they’re just different definitions measuring against the same law – hence one is supposedly ‘legal’ whilst the other is ‘illegal’.

I don’t condone terrorist acts, neither do I condone war. They both show disregard and disrespect for human life. Yet, traditionally, war is seen as acceptable.

We’re stuck in tit-for-tat revenge – it’s just that each sides chooses different methods to beat down the other.

These additional war crimes merely rub salt into the wounds.

I still stand by what I wrote over a year ago in my Trophies of War piece.

Nothing’s really changed.

3D artwork and sculpture by Seamus Cuddihy July 20th, 2005

Sculpture

I’m doing my bit to promote a friend’s artwork and new website. Seamus has been producing unique sculptures for many years, and is happy to commission pieces on request.

“A number of Seamus’s sculptures are held in private collections in the UK, Ireland and Holland. As a member of the Surrey Sculpture Society, Seamus has exhibited extensively in Surrey. He draws inspiration from various sources e.g. observations of life and people. Much of his work is narrative in nature where he seeks to capture gems of truth in a tangible and accessible form.”

On a slightly more technical note, I am hoping that Google and other search engines will skip over to his site, as a result of being linked here.

If you have a moment, take a look, and maybe pass on the link to any friends (particularly UK/London-based) who you think might be interested. I’ve seen some of the pieces and they are of very high quality:

Your song goes a little weird July 18th, 2005

What a love song…

Your Song – Elton John

To be somewhat strange
this internal feeling
I not those simple power to conceal
I much money to have
but boy not if I
I a large house to buy
to be able to experience where the whole two.

if I a sculptor,
but the other side not
or a man to be that beverage to exhibition travel to make
I to be known to have much,
but to be better I my gift to be able my song
and this clay/tone for you
and you its make everyone this to indicate to be able your power song to be completely simply be,

But now that to be I hope you I hope not to make
if you do not occupy to employ that I into word to put down,
how marvelous life is tandis that you in the world is,

Has I on the roof been based,
and given a blow of foot
except pit some foam of the worms
well have it me completely crosswise through,
but the sun completely love-worth summer,
while I wrote it this song
am for persons as you that maintenance that she ignited

Apology in such a way to forget I,
but I see these things me
you forget myself, whether they are green, or they are anyhow blue
The thing are
what I want to really say that
You the zartesten eyes are I never see
