Let people know when you turn off comments February 23rd, 2006

If you are going to turn of blog comments for any reason, it’s etiquette to say so, or make the form unavailable (any blogging platform worth its salt can do this on a per-post basis, or across the whole site).

It’s not amusing to respond to a post only to be told after submitting the comment form that “comments are currently disabled”.

Particularly on a post that’s specifically asking for comments!

On British blogs and bloggers February 18th, 2006

Ashley Norris has written an interesting piece: How many British blogs can you name?.

I only picked it up because he kindly linked in to the Blue Fish Network, which is doing rather well at the moment.

We’re certainly not all British bloggers, in fact we’re quite a diverse bunch, but I am discovering new UK writers through it.

It’s cool to be picked up on by a larger UK network. It’s also quite interesting because early last year there was the possibility of doing some freelance work with Shiny Media.

It didn’t happen, and some months later (mainly because I had a handful of unconnected sites, and my wife had just started a blog) the Blue Fish Network was born.

Who knows where blogging, blog networks, and blogging in Britain will go this year. Everyone seems to have their ideas and predictions - from the newest blogger to the CEOs in major publishing companies (the ones that have heard of blogs, at least).

Shiny are organising a UK PR tour and it will be interesting to see what comes from that. I know others are involved in pushing blogging forward, too.

It’s certainly true that UK blogging is undernourished and undervalued, as compared to the US. That certainly doesn’t mean it’s not strong.

Five forgotten Sesame Street characters February 17th, 2006

Adam Finley laments the forgotten five characters (there may be more) that aren’t around much, if at all, at Sesame Street any more.

Remember Prairie Dawn, Herry Monster, Don Music (banned because kids imitated him bashing his head on the piano, apparently), Roosevelt Franklin, and Sam the Super-Automated Robot.

There’s more, as the comments suggest. Guy Smiley, for example…

Ahh, survival of the fittest on Sesame Street, eh?

The tobaccoccino February 17th, 2006

OK this really does not seem like a good idea:

The post is appropriately entitled “Amazing Feat of Stupidity #54: The Tobaccoccino”

Uh-huh.

Made any interesting drinks lately?

More spin and petty country rivalry February 9th, 2006

Honestly, I hear of a new blog announced and I think “hey that’s cool” - then I read the first few posts and it’s full of snide little comments about country superiority, and ‘teasers’ about future plans.

Spin.

I won’t be bothering to carry on reading it. It’s just game-playing. I can get any news I want from the BBC.

Inappropriate funeral music February 3rd, 2006

Richard asks What’s the most inappropriate music you’ve heard at a funeral, starting off with three he read on an email group:

  1. instrumental - Vangelis - Chariots of fire
  2. Colours of day - chorus - so light up the fire and let the flame burn
  3. Another one bites the dust

Head over and share.

Rubik’s Cube February 2nd, 2006

Do you remember the Rubik’s Cube? Do you still have one?

I had a proper Cube - one with the logo on the central white square, where there were no removable labels and the cube couldn’t be disassembled and reassembled.

I also remember having a hint book on how to solve it…

…in BLACK & WHITE.

Huh?? What’s the point of that? I spent more time working out what colours the different shaded greys were supposed to represent, than actually solving the Cube.

Here’s a cool site about the beloved Cube, with some nice Java animation and solving techniques.

My name is… February 2nd, 2006

Darren asks Rouse or Rowse

In similar vein, my name is Andy Merrett

Two E’s, two R’s, two T’s - in a sensible order.

Not merit or merrit or merret or merritt or meritt or metrett or any other variation.

And the domain name is spelt the same, plus .co.uk

Just in case you’re talking about me ;)

PS definitely not ferret!

What’s your favourite accent? February 2nd, 2006

Here’s a list of my favourite world accents. I do apologise, particularly to people from those countries, for not regionalising them more - I know there are different dialects.

  1. Southern Irish
  2. Scottish
  3. New Zealand
  4. Australian
  5. South African
  6. Canadian
  7. Cornish
  8. Welsh
  9. French
  10. Spanish
  11. Italian

This doesn’t mean I don’t like other accents, but these are great (particularly the female variety!)

What are your favourite accects; the ones that make your spine tingle; that you absolutely adore? Share below or trackback from your own site.
