Commuters, clumsiness and silenceNovember 9th, 2004

Three things have annoyed me today thus far, and it’s only 8.45am.

  1. Commuters / Clumsiness / Impoliteness: A commuter who plonked herself down in the middle seat of a three-seater on the (old-style) train. She knocked my arm and some of my hot coffee went over my trousers. No apology was forthcoming, and I had to spend the next half-an-hour sat next to her. Either she was just oblivious, or rude, or both. Grrr. Which leads me generally to…
  2. Impoliteness: I was brought up to believe that if you do something that disrupts another person, even unintentionally, then you should have the decency to apologise for it. It’s not so much that someone trips me up or kicks my heels, or knocks past me with a huge bag … it’s the fact that they don’t acknowledge their mistake and apologise. I don’t have a go at people if they wrong me (unless it’s really serious or deliberate or life-endangering) just so long as they apologise. It’s basic human courtesy.
  3. Impoliteness (again): If you are not going to be able to help someone out or turn up for a meeting or appointment, you should let the people involved know. We spent yesterday wondering where our volunteer researcher was – he emailed today to say that he doesn’t want the role any more. It would have been better if he had phoned in yesterday to say that. We don’t force volunteers to work for us (the clue’s in the word volunteer, so a little forethought on his part would’ve been good.

Oh well, that’s me done for the moment.
