Cash for experiences: Navy personnel held in Iran tell six-figure stories
Well, ITV has reportedly paid a six-figure sum to get Faye Turney’s side of the story. Pretty appalling – if it were the BBC, license fee payers would be up in arms, but at least it’s just the advertisers who are paying for it.
I already have only limited respect for our service personnel anyway, and this does nothing to improve my view. If Faye really wanted or needed to share her story, she should have done it for free, or insisted that the money went to charity. Seemingly, only a little of the money she’s made will go to related or worthy causes.
In other words, you can profit from going through any ordeal or supposedly newsworthy experience, and then selling your story to the media.
The MoD may (finally) have (temporarily) banned military personnel from selling their stories to the press, but that’s rather too little too late.
Apparently it was alright yesterday.
I agree with some of the relatives of those who died in Iraq in active service – this “cash for experiences” mess is in pretty poor taste.
