Why avoiding the Royal Mail is a good ideaAugust 15th, 2007

Honestly, as if their previous idiocy wasn’t enough, today I was stung with a £1.06 charge for an unknown piece of mail that the sender underpaid for.

It’s hardly surprising that people aren’t putting enough stamps on their mail since the Royal Mail decided to mess about with all the postal rates, introducing complicated size and weight combinations.

Today I was met with the pointless card telling me that I owed Royal Mail £1.06 for the privilege of picking up an unidentified piece of mail. It could be junk mail, for all I know, but the card (which probably cost more than £1.06 of someone’s time to fill out and deliver) doesn’t tell me that.

It’s also punishing me with a charge of 1,667% the underpayment (6p). Yes, that’s fair isn’t it?

If the postman had come with the letter I would have happily given him six pence, or refused the letter – but no, I have to make the half hour round trip, pay the money, for the privilege of getting something that might be useful.
Unsurprisingly, I’m not going. If it’s that important they’ll have to send it again. Or call me.

It’s why I heartily agree with this article and why I try to minimise my use of our postal service.
Grrr!

I agree completely. The exact same thing just happened to me, and foolishly I went to collect the item, as a result I missed my train to work and was an hour late!
The letter was from my Dad, by the way, who obviously doesn’t understand the new postal prices; but then, who does?
